The Utah State Office of Rehabilitation (USOR) is seeking a skilled and motivated, full-time, Orientation and Mobility/Cane Travel Instructor to work for the Division of Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired (DSBVI) in the Salt Lake City office. The candidate must be certified with a COMS or NOMC or are in the process of fulfilling all of those requirements and will be ready to sit for certification within the next 12 months. Our goal is to increase independence, community integration and productivity for the blind and visually impaired. The mission of DSBVI is to assist individuals in achieving their highest level of independence, participation in society and employment consistent with their individual interests, values, preferences and abilities.

Principal Duties
The Orientation and Mobility/Cane Travel Instructor will perform the following tasks:
Teaches students orientation and mobility in a variety of environments including work, college campuses, residential and business environments, public transportation and recreational settings.
Designs travel routes that give students an opportunity to master skills that allow the student to travel efficiently and safely and teaches students to travel with ability and confidence.
Teaches the students to accurately evaluate their travel skills and teaches the relationship between good travel skills and job placement.
Provides curriculum monitoring and evaluation.
Prepares monthly student reports and evaluations.
Provides mentoring to students.
Coordinates and provides outreach presentations to organizations, agencies and community groups in a recruiting effort for all rehab programs.
Encouraged to attend state conventions of the blind.
Helps students reach intermediate objectives and vocational goals.
Coordinates and participates in monthly training center activities for students.
Reinforces other adapting to blindness training as needed, such as cane travel, home management and Braille.
Leads group discussions to promote self-confidence, self-reliance and positive attitudes about blindness.
Attends staff meetings and client staffing as scheduled.

The Ideal Applicant
The model applicant for this position is someone who:
Has at least 2 years of experience.
Is certified with a COMS or NOMC or are in the process of fulfilling all of those requirements and will be ready to sit for certification within the next 12 months.
Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft office such as Word, Outlook and Excel.
Delivers presentations or trainings using acceptable methods and techniques.
Applies principles, theories and practices of vocational training.
Follows applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures.
Deals with people in a manner which shows respect, tact and professionalism.
