Community Service Officer Starting Salary: 44 ($43,775.00/year)
Individuals hired in this position have the opportunity to progress up to $65,663/year, which is the maximum salary for this position as of December 2022.

As a non-sworn member of the department and under general supervision, to perform a variety of duties both in the office and in the field. Specific duties will be determined by assignment to a particular division or department and may include interaction with the public, computer data entry, investigation and reporting of minor crimes or ordinance violations, and general assistance to city personnel as determined.
Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. 1. Responds to citizen requests for non-emergency services such as VIN checks, minor thefts with no suspect information or investigative leads, accidents, lost and found property.
2. Creates lost and found property reports.
3. Conducts telephone follow-up on criminal investigations as requested by a supervisor.
4. Receives information from citizens in person, by telephone, and in writing. Ensures that information is properly distributed to the appropriate person(s).
5. Identifies abandoned vehicles, locates owners, and conducts vehicle impounds.
6. Identifies and resolves parking problems and other traffic hazards. Responds to vehicle lockout calls.
Provides traffic control when requested to assist patrol officers. Transports papers and property.
7. Assists in searching for missing children.
8. Provides crime prevention information and presentations to the public.
9. Serves summons/subpoenas and conducts property inspections in accordance with the city ordinances.
10. Recovers abandoned property.
11. Conducts sex offender registry updates and files appropriate paperwork.
12. Maintains Project Lifesaver data and follows up with those that are involved.
13. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions
Difficult working positions, including standing, walking, or sitting uncomfortably for extended periods.
Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under uncontrolled conditions. May be required to report for work on scheduled days off and/or work during emergency situations. May be subject to irregular working hours that may change on a periodic basis. May encounter and deal with subjects who are hostile or uncooperative.
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent. Classwork or other technical education in criminal justice or work experience in a field requiring working knowledge of police procedures.
Two years of customer service experience dealing with conflict resolution and handling customer complaints, oral presentations and report writing.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
Successfully complete the St. George Police Selection Examination and requirements established by the City of St. George and the City’s Police Department. This may include written and oral examination, physical examination, background investigations, computer voice stress and/or polygraph examination, drug test, psychological evaluation, and physical fitness test.
Must possess a valid Utah driver’s license. Driver’s license must be maintained throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of city, state, and federal codes and ordinances as they apply to the employee’s assignment.
Working knowledge of the City and Police Department’s policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of certain computer programs (i.e., Google, Microsoft Office) that are used to create documents/forms.
Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
Operating communications equipment including telephone and two-way radios.
Operating a motor vehicle safely.
Basic report writing, police radio codes and procedures, grammar, and punctuation.
Learn local geography, city streets, public buildings, and businesses.
Observe situations, record them, and react quickly and calmly.
Be effectively trained to prepare clear and concise reports for agency and court use.
Deal effectively and courteously with coworkers and the general public.
Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Learn to properly interpret and make decisions in accordance with federal, state, and local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
Professionally communicate with citizens, other employees, and agencies in difficult and possibly hostile situations.
Exercise good judgment and maintain self-control during periods of extreme stress.
Operate a police vehicle on a non-emergency response basis and maintain vehicles and equipment as assigned.
Deescalate confrontational situations/communicate effectively.
Community Services Officers are restricted from responding to crimes in progress or unsecured scenes and any enforcement activities requiring use of force.
