The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a motivated person to audit records of motor carrier companies which pertain to compliance with State and Federal safety regulations and inspect various motor vehicles including mechanical condition of trucks and equipment and drivers records at Ports of Entry. You will Inspect cargo including tie-downs, blocking, bracing and proper placarding of materials. You will Inspect documents carried by drivers. You will also complete all required reports and other pertinent documentation concerning inspection; determine violations, if any, and take appropriate action; such as issues citations, places driver and/or vehicle out of service. You will provide information concerning traffic laws, policies and procedures and other regulations and policies as well as road and weather conditions.
Principle Duties
As a Port of Entry Inspector you will:
Enforce laws, rules, and regulations.
Ensure compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
Schedule and conduct inspections and/or investigations.
Maintain detailed inspection or investigation records, prepare reports, and attend to other related administrative requirements.
Write or draft correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
Represent the state or the employing agency in lawsuits, grievances, and complaints.
The Ideal Candidate
The best person for the position must:
Be at least 18 years of age
Have a valid driver’s license
Have a high school diploma or equivalent
Be certified in CVSA Part A and B or be able to take the provided courses and pass with an 80%, which is required by the National Training Center, within 10 months after hire.
Be certified in CVSA General Hazardous Materials and Cargo Tanks or be able to take the provided courses and pass with an 80%, which is required by the National Training Center, within 10 months after hire.

Applicable laws, rules, regulations and/or policies and procedures
Read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures
Ensure compliance with contract terms, policies and procedures, etc.
Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
Provide consultation and/or expert advice or testimony
Arrange, coordinate, or schedule time and details
Use State or agency-specific software application program(s)
Ability and desire to work at a high motivational level in a quality performance based environment.

Will be required to work CVSA and State special functions
Will be required to attend annual State and Federal training
This position requires access to the Utah Criminal Justice Information System (UCJIS). Please note: we will be unable to make an offer of employment to those who can’t obtain system access. Any of the following will result in system access denial:
Pending cases or open dispositions for deniable offenses (listed below)
Felony convictions
Misuse of UCJIS information conviction (UCA 53-10-108)
Computer Fraud convictions
There may be exposure to adverse, inclement, and varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions – Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around semi trucks
Physical Requirements – Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
