The Government Relations Manager works with the Director of Government Relations to implement the Utah Transit Authority’s (UTA) agency-wide governmental relations strategic plan with a focus on municipal and county elected officials. The Manager will also support the Director in implementing targeted strategies with the state legislature. Proactively coordinate with external and internal partners to ensure UTA’s interests are fully represented. Assists in maintaining relationships with elected officials and other key local partners and engaging them in transit opportunities. Prepares analyses and research on proposed public policy and briefs the Director to help inform the Agency’s government relations strategy.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 
EDUCATION/TRAINING:
Bachelor’s degree in public administration, public policy, intergovernmental relations, or closely related field, or equivalent experience from related fields.
 
EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) or more years of professional experience in public policy, intergovernmental relations or related field. Experience in government, community affairs, public transit management and policies is strongly preferred.
 
Knowledge/Skills:
Understanding of federal, state and local government policy, regulations and processes.
Policy research and writing techniques.
Strong project management and critical thinking skills required.
Demonstrated competency in communicating with a variety of internal and external stakeholders at all levels, with diplomacy and tact.
Strong written communication skills, including writing business communications and reports.
Proficiency in computer applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint preferred.
Abilities: (UTA Competencies)
Business Acumen – political sensitivity and acumen required; ability to maintain an up-to-date understanding of transit systems and correlating public policy at the local, state and federal levels.
Communicates Effectively – ability to express thoughts, initiatives, and issues with clarity in both written and verbal form and using correct grammar; ability to listen and communicate salient points from meetings or discussions.
Managerial Courage – ability to stand strong in the face of adversity and taking necessary risks to achieve results.
Drives Results – ability to accomplish objectives despite obstacles or setbacks; exceeding goals successfully; pushing self and others to achieve results.
Must have a valid Utah driver’s license and no more than 4 moving violations in the past 3 years; cannot have more than 1 violation of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs within the last 10 years.
 
This job requires regular and predictable attendance.
