Job Title: Environmental Maintenance Worker I

Reports To: Environmental Superintendent

Status: Full Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Wage Scale: $18.43 – $28.08 per hour (Typical starting wage $18.43 – $23.25 DOE)

Close Date: November 7th, 2024

Hours: Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday, 6:00 AM – 4:30 PM

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for performing a variety of entry-level semi-skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance, upkeep, and repair of sewer, storm-drain, and land-drain collection and conveyance systems. Essential duties of the position include: Perform installation or repair of sewer, storm drain, and land drain infrastructure; Inspect, repair, and replace manholes, pipes, concrete collars, and plugged ditches and culverts; Inspect and maintain detention basin structures, including mowing, spraying, and trimming; Tear out and repair street when locating and uncovering broken lines; Assist in placement of pipe; Flag on-coming vehicles to protect the public and workers; Be on-call periodically throughout the year; Respond to emergencies, and as needed, even on weekends, holidays, and after-hours; Maintain a productive working environment which includes, but is not limited to, a spirit of cooperation with co-workers, peers and the public; Assist with other public work functions, such as snow clearing, street and water maintenance; Other duties as assigned by the Environmental Superintendent.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of machines and tools, including their uses, repair, and maintenance;
Knowledge of safety practices and standard operating procedures;
Knowledge of heavy equipment operation;
Skilled in handing multiple projects with interruptions;
Skilled in prioritizing and organizing workload to meet deadlines;
Skilled in watching indicators to make sure a machine is working properly;
Ability to receive and follow verbal and written instruction;
Ability to work a rotating on-call schedule in addition to the regular work schedule;
Ability to respond to emergency situations and handle them properly;
Ability to properly mix chemicals according to manufacturer recommendations;
Ability to work in confined spaces;

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, reach with hand and arms, talk, hear, see, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, use hands to grab and handle or feel and lift 25-50 pounds. The employee is also required to be able to coordinate two or more limbs while sitting, standing, or lying down. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

The noise level of the maintenance equipment is generally loud noise or very loud noise.

Work is performed primarily in outdoor settings and in all weather conditions. Employee is exposed to hazards associated with sewer, storm drain, and land drain maintenance including untreated effluent, smoke, noxious odors, fumes, chemicals, liquid chemicals, solvents, dyes, and oils.

The employee occasionally works in confined spaces and near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older
High School Diploma or GED, within 10 months of hire
Valid Utah Driver’s License or able to obtain one within 14 days of hire
Must live within 25 miles from City Hall to respond quickly during on-call or emergency situations
Must receive Hepatitis A and B Immunizations within 6 months of hire or a signed statement rejecting the vaccinations
