Job Title: Regional Habitat Biologist II (2) positions

Job Description:
Are you a natural resource professional who likes to be a part of a team whose core values are integrity, professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and cooperation? Do you also excel at motivating people and solving problems? If so, this might be the perfect job for you. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is looking for a talented, energetic, and people-oriented leader to fill the role of Habitat Biologist in our Price and Monticello office. You would oversee the implementation of DWR’s regional habitat restoration activities, including the Watershed Restoration Initiative (WRI) and Habitat Council projects on private, state, and federal lands. Responsibilities would also include fostering local partnerships building relationships with local, state, and federal partners and local elected officials, and assisting other biologists with regional impact analysis activities and coordination.

Principal duties:
As the Regional Habitat Biologist, you will:

Cultivate relationships with private landowners, local, state, and federal land managers, and private conservation partners and organizations.
Negotiate methods to avoid, minimize, or mitigate impacts to wildlife region-wide and on division land from development projects and public impacts
Develop and monitor project budgets and expenditures, ensuring efficient use of program resources while adhering to relevant statutes, rules, and policies.
Review, analyze, and comment on development proposals that have the potential to impact wildlife or their habitats
Establish a culture of teamwork and collaboration through meaningful interactions with fellow team members and staff from other regional administrative sections.

The Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have:Master’s degree in a related field (e.g. wildlife management, range science, restoration ecology, botany, environmental science) or a bachelor’s degree in a related field and two years of directly related work experience
Proficient in the use of ARC map and GIS and GPS tools
The ability to communicate information and ideas clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
Previous experience managing projects, programs, and budgets, with attention to detail.
Proven ability to build collaborative, solution-based partnerships with diverse stakeholders and organizations.

Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Paid Time Off:
Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.

Qualifications
 

Knowledge, skills and abilities:
A Bachelor’s Degree in a natural resource management field, wildlife biology, resource conservation, or another closely related field; or directly related work experience equivalent.
Demonstrated abilities to build partnerships and work with diverse people
The ability to write well; excellent verbal communication skills; ability to speak in public
Familiar with ARC Map software and other GIS programs and GPS tools.
Familiar with partner organizations such as the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Utah Department of Transportation.

 

Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:

Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
Typical work schedule is 40 hours per week, with occasional weekends, evenings and emergency response.
Preference May Be Given To Applicants Who Have:A Bachelors or Masters degree in a natural resource management field, wildlife biology or another closely related field; and least 2-years of successful work experience in a wildlife related field.
Requirements:Valid Drivers License
This is a full-time position, which occasionally requires irregular hours, including evenings, weekends and during emergency situations.
Occasional overnight travel within Utah, and occasionally outside of the state, is required to attend meetings, conferences, support habitat management projects, etc.
