The Utah State Hospital Library Technician is a one of a kind position, sharing time equally between library management and volunteer services. We are looking for just the right person who will maintain a welcoming and comfortable library environment for our patients, assist to orient and supervise volunteers, and assist with outreach services. This person is responsible to ensure that the patient library is fully organized and operational for daily use, as well as assisting to manage and organize the hospitals robust volunteer program.

Principle Duties

Assist with managing volunteers, to include; qualification, orientation/training, scheduling, and supervision.
Plan and supervise volunteer activities, under the direction of the Volunteer Services Coordinator.
Ensure that appropriate library materials are available to patients and staff.
Review, purchase and/or select materials for collection(s), prepare materials for addition to collection.
Manage music database, and provide music for patients on SD cards.
Work with Vocational Rehabilitation coordinators to facilitate hiring and supervision of patient employees in the library.
Contribute to library and volunteer services programming improvements and outreach efforts.
Manage library budget.
Assists library patrons in the use of computer and electronic resources.
Classifies library materials using MARC and AACR guidelines.
Assist the Volunteer Services Coordinator with volunteer activities, programs and services

The Ideal CandidateHas supervisory experience.
Has professional experience working with mentally ill patients/clients.
Has professional work experience in a library program.
Can work independently and works well with a diverse population.
Has a solid understanding of available library services.
Preference will be given to current DHHS employees with experience working with the mental health patient population.

Example of Duties
In this position, your work days will be spent:

Assisting patients, volunteers, and employees to complete forms and other paperwork.
Supervising patient employees and community volunteers.
Assisting in the planning, facilitation, and execution of the Forgotten Patient Christmas Project.
Performing library reference work.
Maintaining the integrity and organization of the library.
Providing basic instruction and assistance on computer related issues.
Providing patients with music and other library equipment.
Accessing databases to obtain various kinds of information.
Editing written material for accuracy, format, and arrangement.
Utilizing technology and a wide variety of resources.

Supplemental Information

Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
Often, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
