The Utah Historical Society is seeking an experienced and culture-focused leader to serve in the role of Visitor Services Manager for the forthcoming Museum of Utah. The person in this role will oversee the Museum’s operations and services that are focused on providing an excellent visitor experience. They will be responsible for developing and implementing a visitor services experience that will guide Utah’s inaugural state history museum. Leading a team of frontline staff, this position will partner with multiple departments within the Museum, the Utah Historical Society, and the Capitol Complex to support the visitor journey from beginning to end. The ideal candidate for this role will be a thoughtful and creative manager – someone who enjoys working with the public and coaching people toward success.

Title: Visitor Services Manager
Reports to: Museum Director
Compensation: up to $32/hr depending upon experience
Location: 3760 S. Highland Drive prior to museum opening. Offices will be located at the Museum of Utah following beginning in May 2026.

Key Responsibilities
Staffing and Leadership

Oversee the daily operations of frontline visitor experiences, including the daily operations of a visitor services desk, gift shop, and
Oversee visitor services staff, which includes hiring, onboarding, ongoing training, daily briefings, floor operation, and scheduling.
Develop and implement a visitor services training program, providing opportunities for advancement and learning within the department.
Cultivate a culture of curiosity and customer service that leads to a positive work environment and excellent visitor experience.
Develop appropriate policies and procedures related to visitor experiences in order to maintain industry best practices.
Collaborate with appropriate departments and partners to ensure a high level of care when it comes to cleanliness, maintenance, and high operating standards.
Gift Shop
Develop Provide strategic support to Museum store manager in creating policies and procedures that lead to successful gift shop operations.
Supporting point of sale policies, daily financial management, customer service and visitor services desk expectations.
Visitor Services Strategy and Evaluation
Collaborate with museum leadership, volunteer manager, education team, and others to ensure visitor services goals are met.
Align goals of the visitor services team to the overall mission and strategies outlined in the UHS strategic plan.
Communicate and develop reporting functions for ongoing visitor services goals, needs, performance, and efforts to UHS leadership.
Oversee review of visitor feedback and lead a cross-departmental process to identify needs and opportunities that improve the visitor experience.
Financial Management
In coordination with the Museum Director, maintain regular oversight of the Visitor Services budget.
Operations and Program support
As appropriate, collaborate with other partners on the Capitol Complex to ensure the Museum of Utah experience aligns with the visitor experience on Capitol Hill.
Coordinate with UHS programs to support on-site programs, special events, and mission focused efforts at the Museum of Utah.
Point of contact for DFCM and any onsite maintenance needs.
Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for visitor-related communications, including responding to inquiries and managing visitor feedback.

Additional Responsibilities
Some evening or weekend working hours may be required in order to support the public initiatives of the Utah Historical Society.
Broad support or participation in the strategic direction of the UHS.
Collaboration with community partners or internal stakeholders on special projects
Other duties as assigned.
Ideal Candidate/Qualifications
The successful candidate will be a self-driven and culture-focused leader with experience overseeing large teams of frontline staff. Ideal qualifications include:
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the cultural sector, leading large teams with proof of maintaining a positive working environment.
Demonstrated career growth and progressive responsibilities in a customer service or visitor services setting.
Demonstrated project management experience, with a strong history of leadership and collaboration.
Excellent oral communication and presentation skills; demonstrated written communication skills.
Experience and background in public institutions is a plus.
