Job Title: Utah to Legislative Assistant – Return Utah
Location: Salt Lake City
Hourly Rate: $20.00

Job Description:
This is a temporary (non-benefitted), full-time position for potential Return Utah candidates. The job will be performed on behalf of the Department of Natural Resources Administrative Office within its Salt Lake City headquarters with an approximate appointment of January 6, 2025 – March 21, 2025.

The Return Utah program is a formal career reentry program, designated for Utahns desiring to re-enter the workforce after a career break. Along with on-the-job training, Return Utah roles provides up to 16-weeks (more or less depending on the appointed role) of transitional support (similar to an internship) which includes an office technology review, coaching, career development, mentorship, networking opportunities, and job market readiness training.

Career break reasoning is irrelevant to hire. Program participants have taken career breaks for varied reasons including childcare, chronic illness, caring for a family member, educational pursuits, retirement, military service, volunteerism, entrepreneurship, political office, travel, etc.

 

To be eligible for this return-to-work opportunity candidates:
Must have a career break of one year or more at the time of application
(unless the candidate is affiliated with the military in any way including as a military spouse/partner), or
Demonstrate underemployed at the time of application
and/or
Have prior professional/life experience in a functional area of interest
 

This is a temporary position providing employment and transitional support for the term of the role assigned. While Return Utah will provide access to resources that will enable you to explore further employment opportunities, your participation does NOT guarantee employment with the State of Utah upon conclusion of the program or your assignment.

Principal Duties: (75 percent)
Assist DNR administration with coordinating the department’s legislative priorities and efforts.
Research, track, and monitor legislation directly impacting the department.
Facilitate cooperation with the department’s divisions and office legislative liaisons.
Communicate relevant updates and coordination meetings between department and division leadership, and internal legislative liaisons.
Prepare presentation materials, including fact sheets, backgrounders, position statements, and messaging for committee meetings.
Attend appropriations and standing committee meetings when possible.
Secondary Duties: (25 percent)Develop content for both internal and external audiences, like newsletters, media releases, briefings, and editorials.
Create digital content for the department website and social media platforms.
Assist administrative staff with phone calls, constituent service requests, general inquiries, and other duties as assigned.
Applicants should have a background in political science or communications with an understanding of research and writing for diverse audiences, including journalistic writing. Applicants should be organized, personable, and able to prioritize and work well with others.
