The Division of Child & Family Services (DCFS) is looking to fill a Technical Writer position to work in the Salt Lake City DCFS office to perform writing and editing tasks of a very technical nature for DCFS. They write, design, and develop policies/procedures, rules, legal forms, and other related material to comply with all legal requirements by federal and state laws, prepare brochures and other informational material. They also research, investigate, analyze, and interpret changes in federal laws, state laws, administrative rules, and other legal requirements; and evaluate the potential impact of technical and legal changes on the Department or Division policies and/or procedures.

Hourly rate starts at $25.33

Responsibilities

Developing or modifying policies or standards; coordinating the policy process.
Developing rules; obtaining feedback for the regulated sectors; coordinating the rulemaking process; monitors compliance with rulemaking requirements.
Reviewing and editing technical writing.
Ensuring compliance with applicable federal and/or state laws, regulations, and/or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
Providing consultation, making recommendations, giving appropriate advice, and/or facilitates decisions related to public information.
Developing and maintaining area specific records, reviews reports, and providing area centralization for agency-level coordination.
Acting as a resource for management and staff; providing technical support within areas of responsibility.
Analyzing, summarizing and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results and/or making recommendations.
Writing or drafting technical reports, articles, or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
Qualifications

Experience in writing policy, or other technical writing documents.
Proficiency with computer programs such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Forms, Sheets, and Slides).
Experience in interpreting and applying policies, grant requirements, technical directives, state or federal standards and regulations.
Compose and/or prepare correspondence, memoranda, promotional materials, forms, newsletters, manuals, and reports using appropriate word processing and spreadsheet tools.

Preference

Preference may be given to candidates who:

Have five or more years of professional work experience in policy writing.
Have a bachelor’s degree in technical writing or in English with technical writing coursework, with one year of professional work experience in policy/technical writing.

Supplemental Information
 

All DCFS job offers are contingent upon passing a Background Screening Application (BSA).

Must have a valid driver’s license. Travel may be required; you may be required to use your personal vehicle to perform the duties of this position; approved mileage is reimbursable through State Finance.

Physical Requirements

Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
Working Conditions

Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
