The Utah State Tax Commission’s Special Services Division is looking for a skilled, motivated and customer service-oriented individual to fill its Tax Compliance Agent I position. This person will play an important role in our division’s mission to answer taxpayer inquiries and support the funding of multiple state public service programs. You must be current with filing your state and federal taxes as well as pass an FBI level background check.
The Return Utah program is similar to an internship designed for adults looking to re-enter the workforce after an extended absence. These opportunities are structured as return-to-work positions that provide the experience, training, skills, and mentoring an individual need to return to the workforce.
Return Utah is a 16-week program for people who have taken a career break for at least one years or more for reasons such as starting or raising a family, caring for a family member, chronic illness, enhanced education, other personal/career related needs, etc. Those serving, separated, or retired from military service and their spouses and/or partners are not required to meet the two-year requirement. A career break of any length makes them eligible to participate in the program.
This is a full-time, intent-to-hire Return Utah opportunity. Upon completion of the program, based on performance, participants may receive an offer of employment.
To be eligible for this return-to-work opportunity, candidates must:
Be on a career break of one or more years at time of application unless currently serving, recently separated, retired from military service, or supporting a military spouse/partner.
Have prior professional experience in functional area of interest.
Principal Duties
The Tax Compliance Agent I will need to:
Answer phones and provide information to customers as part of a contact center
Research and respond to taxpayer inquiries
Take payments
Work in a fast paced and high call volume environment
Provide tax information
Explain and apply policies and procedures to taxpayers
Best Qualified Candidate
The best qualified candidate for this position is someone who:
Can handle being on the phone for a majority of a workday.
Has exceptional customer service skills.
Has the ability to handle the occasional escalated call.
Salary
Non-state employees are hired for this position only at entry level, $20.28 an hour. Current state employees are subject to DHRM rules on transfers or promotions. We are unable to negotiate hourly wage amounts.
Remote Optional
This position is eligible for a remote work schedule after you have been fully trained.
These positions may be eligible for remote work from anywhere in Utah (work must be performed in Utah),
in office work may be required.
Internet Speed
If working at a location other than in a state office, this position requires the employee to provide internet service that is of sufficient speed to support all work-related applications, systems, and devices.
Preferences
Preference may be given:
to candidates that live outside the Wasatch Front (Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, Tooele and Utah counties).
to those with experience working in a call center environment; or,
to those who speak Spanish.

Retirement – Utah Retirement Systems (URS):
Employees hired on or after than 7/1/2011 and have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System. Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.
Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in Tier I Public Employees System.
Paid Time Off-
Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
Annual leave increases with years of service.
There are also 12 paid holidays.
The Agency
Responsibilities
Determines debt, and negotiate resolution of delinquent taxes.
Contact individuals or organizations to secure delinquent payments, and/or makes payment arrangements.
Ensures customer compliance with applicable federal and state laws.
Agent will comply with agency rules, standards and guidelines.
Enters data into a computer system and retrieves, or corrects previously entered data.
Reviews, processes, and verifies accounts and account balances.
Reviews documents to find discrepancies and makes needed adjustments.

Working Conditions
Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
Physical Requirements
Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
Other Requirements
Personal tax filings and vehicle registration must be current and complete.
A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a FBI level background investigation.
