The Utah State Tax Commission’s Taxpayer Services Division is looking for a skilled and motivated individual to fill its Tax Compliance Agent I position. This person will play an integral role in Division’s mission to answer taxpayer inquires. You must be current on your state and federal tax filings and pass a FBI level background check.
The Tax Compliance Agent I will need to:
Answer phones and provide information to customers as part of a call center
Research and respond to taxpayer inquiries
Work under pressure and meet deadlines
Provide general information
Explain and apply policies and procedures to taxpayers
The Ideal Candidate
The model candidate for this position is someone who:Can handle being on the phone for a majority of a work day.
Has exceptional customer service skills.
Has the ability to work in an adverse environment dealing with upset people over the phone.
This job may be filled at any of the advertised levels.Collection Agent
Salary Range $15.18 – $24.06
Compliance Agent I
Salary Range $17.86 – $28.33
If working at a location other than in a state office, this position requires the employee to provide internet service that is of sufficient speed to support all work-related applications, systems, and devices.
New employees are brought in as a Collection Agent with opportunities to advance to a Tax Compliance Agent I with on-the-job experience and the passing of knowledge tests. Salary depends on the job level offered within the series. Non-state employees are hired for this position only at entry level (Collection Agent), $16.03 an hour.
Preference may be given:to candidates that live outside the Wasatch Front (Weber, Davis, Salt Lake and Utah counties);
to those with experience working in a call center environment; or,
to those who speak Spanish.

Example of Duties
Determines debt, and negotiate resolution of delinquent taxes.
Contact individuals or organizations to secure delinquent payments, and/or makes payment arrangements.
Ensures customer compliance with applicable federal and state laws.
Agent will comply with agency rules, standards and guidelines.
Enters data into a computer system and retrieves, or corrects previously entered data.
Reviews, processes, and verifies accounts and account balances.
Reviews documents to find discrepancies and makes needed adjustments.
Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
Physical RequirementsTypically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
Other RequirementsPersonal tax filings and vehicle registration must be current and complete.
A conditional offer of employment will be made pending a satisfactory completion of a FBI level background investigation.
