The State Board of Education is seeking a Policy advisor to join our team of passionate education professionals who wants to make a difference in the lives of Utah’s school children.
This role will be located in the Salt Lake area with opportunity for flexibility telework.
Responsibilities include:
Key Roles and Responsibilities aligned with the agency mission and vision
Supporting the Deputy Superintendent of Policy’s role and efforts related to advocacy for public education policy and funding requests with the Utah State Legislature.
Supporting the facilitation of USBE’s external policy development by supporting the Board’s rulemaking and supporting Board meetings, committees, task forces and other select advisory groups, including attending and providing policy support to Board standing committees and reviewing legislation and providing policy options to Board members, staff and Legislators on implementation.
Facilitating the Board’s Student Advisory Committee, including soliciting and reviewing appointments to the Committee, facilitating agenda development and SAC meetings, and managing logistics related to the Committee’s work.
Additional responsibilities include:Drafting Board rules and policies.
Providing general policy support to Board members and Board staff.
Providing information to Legislators and Legislative staff.
Performing research on education policy issues.
Conducting education policy analysis.
Typical Qualifications:
Necessary qualifications include:
Excellent critical thinking, analytical, writing, and communication skills;
The ability to work independently and within a team;
The ability to plan, organize, coordinate, multitask and prioritize under pressure with minimal supervision;
The ability to work long hours during legislative session and commute to meetings and events throughout Utah as needed;
The ability and prior experience presenting policy options and research to large or high level audiences; and
The ability to work with a variety of people, including policymakers and elected officials.
Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candiate will have:A juris doctorate degree, a master’s degree in public administration, public policy, education, economics, or political science, or a master’s or doctorate degree in another relevant discipline.
Passed the Utah State Bar or the bar exam of another state.
Experience working with the Utah State Legislature or other policymaking body.
Knowledge of public education laws, programs and policies.
Experience drafting statute, administrative rules or policies.
Preference:
Preference will be given to applicants with a juris doctorate degree, a master’s degree in public administration, public policy, education, economics, or political science, or a master’s or doctorate degree in another relevant discipline.
