This rare opportunity is with the The Utah Labor Commission in the Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division (UALD), Wage Claim Unit.
Remote Work & Office Requirement: the successful applicant must be a Utah resident and will be expected to work in the Division’s downtown Salt Lake City office one or more days per week, depending on coverage needs.
PRINCIPAL DUTIESIn this position, you will be part of the Utah Antidiscrimination and Labor Division Management team, and manage the wage claim unit. This unit requires investigations by neutral fact-finders into alleged violations of Utah wage and child labor laws, which requires you, as the manager, to have a thorough understanding of the relevant laws. Your roles and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:
Supervising wage claim intake officers, investigators, and wage hearing officers including:Training, coaching, motivating, offering support and guidance, providing constructive feedback, and fostering a positive work environment.
Hiring, determining workload and delegating assignments, monitoring and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
Conducting investigations into complaints of unpaid wages, child labor violations, and unlawful retaliatory actions.
Receiving, researching, and responding to elevated questions, concerns and/or complaints.
Providing information, explaining policy and procedures, and/or facilitating a resolution.
Delivering presentations or instruction to staff, management, or the general public.
Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, or agency rules, standards and guidelines, etc.
Maintains contact with applicable agencies/organizations for guidance in the solutions of compliance problems.
Plans and manages projects and/or programs. Writes (or discusses) project/program plan(s), recommendation(s) and/or finding(s).
Gathers documentation to support negotiated resolution of non-compliance issues.
Issues or recommends issuance of orders, citations, sanctions, and/or warnings for infractions involving violations of federal and/or state laws, rules and regulations.
Recommend penalties and corrective action for non-compliance with regulations.
Work closely with (and/or supervise) Hearing Officers and review Orders issued as a result of informal hearings.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Strong analytical skills in determining violations of the law.
Expert and thorough knowledge of and the ability to read and apply appropriate laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Exceptional writing skills with the ability to write clearly and concisely including the ability to draft correspondence, reports, legal documents, and other written materials.
The ability to work independently and collaboratively and prioritize tasks with little or no supervision.
The ability to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, decorum, and professionalism.
PREFERRED
2 years management experience in the past 5 years.
Juris Doctor (JD), or three years experience as a legal assistant or paralegal.
Familiarity with the UALD claim procedures.
Familiarity with the Utah Payment of Wages Act, the Utah Employment of Minors Act, and the Utah Minimum Wage Act.

Retirement – Utah Retirement Systems (URS):Employees who have any service credit with an employer covered by the Utah Retirement Systems prior to 7/1/2011 are in the Tier I Public Employees System.
Employees hired on or after 7/1/2011 and who have never been in the URS retirement system have two options for retirement in the Tier II System.Tier 2 Hybrid Retirement System. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary between both plans (pension and 401(k))
Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
Paid Time Off:Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
