The Utah Labor Commission have two Compliance Safety and Health Officer (CSHO) positions open within the Utah Occupational Safety and Health (UOSH) division.

**These positions are eligible for full-time telework, for State of Utah residents, with occasional travel to Salt Lake City for training.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
You will independently schedule and perform a full range of workplace safety and health inspections throughout the State of Utah in every industry to evaluate employer compliance with state occupational safety and health regulations. This may include:Analyzing facts and evidence gathered during an investigation to determine if a workplace safety violation occurred
Researching specific safety and health laws and rules incorporated by the state
Issuing or recommending issuance of citations and penalties for infractions involving violations of state laws and rules regarding occupational safety and health
Reviewing and analyzing safety and health programs to assess effectiveness and compliance
Identifying physical and chemical hazards
Maintaining detailed inspection and investigation records
Preparing case files
Drafting narratives and citations
Providing compliance assistance, making recommendations, giving appropriate advice, and/or facilitating decisions
Providing testimony relative to citations issued in depositions, or informal and formal administrative hearings
Delivering presentations, training, or instruction to staff, management, clients, or the general public.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
Our ideal candidate will have:Recent experience conducting workplace safety and health inspections or investigations.
Experience reading and interpreting federal and state laws, regulations, and rules.
Excellent writing skills.
The ability to communicate professionally with people from all walks of life.

PREFERENCESCandidates who have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in a related field of study (Occupational Safety and Health, Environment Safety, Public Health and/or Safety, Science, etc.).
May be given for an applicant that is fluent in Spanish, in addition to English.

Typical Qualifications
(includes knowledge, skills, and abilities required upon entry into position and trainable after entry into position)

Ability to interview witnesses, employees, management and victims.
Ability to operate and adjust varied safety and health equipment.
Knowledge of modern developments, principles and practices of occupational safety and health as related to the recognition and control of occupational safety and health hazards.
Knowledge of principles of production, processing, storage and distribution of manufactured goods.
Ability to apply agency policies/procedures, professional and/or industry standards.
Ability to identify developmental needs of others and to coach, mentor, or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of safety and health management principles and evaluate safety and health management systems.
Ability to determine sampling techniques and related equipment to monitor and/or collect samples of substances for analysis in processes, unusual circumstances and varying situations.
Knowledge of methods, techniques and practices used in determining, controlling and eliminating safety and health hazards in the workplace.
Ability to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to speak before a group of people.
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.

Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state per UCA53-3-202(1)(a).
DHRM rules apply for promotions/transfers.

Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc.
Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
