Status: Part Time, Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Wage Scale: $17.96-$26.93 (Typical starting wage $17.96-$22.45 DOE)

Hours: Monday-Friday (28 hours per week)

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for keeping the Syracuse Community Center visually pleasing, clean, running and functioning, and performing janitorial duties throughout the recreation facility.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Cleaning restrooms, emptying trash, cleaning windows, carpet cleaning, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping floors, cleaning gym equipment room, community rooms, and the kitchen.
Maintaining the building structure, electrical plumbing, HVAC, appliances, etc.
Perform routine safety inspections of the Community Center, routine maintenance, restock supplies, routine and specialty floor cleaning, detect malfunctions, identify repairs needed and recommendations using pre-established check sheet.
Perform minor electrical maintenance, such as replacement or repair fixtures (e.g. wall switches and outlets, incandescent and fluorescent bulbs and tubes, ballast, sockets, fuses, minor appliances, cords, etc.) using appropriate hand, power, and specialty tools.
Perform minor painting, carpentry, and masonry work (e.g. preparing surfaces and using brush, sprayer, or roller to apply paints, stains and varnishes, hanging doors, fitting locks and handles, etc.)
Perform minor HVAC work (e.g. adjusting and calibrating thermostats, pneumatic controls, installing pipes for high pressure air systems, repairing water, gas, electric, air pipes, and lines in or under floors, walkways, and walls, etc.)
Perform minor plumbing maintenance (e.g. replacement or repair of leaks in drains and faucets, unclogging of drains, trenching and laying new lines, replacing drain hoses on washers and similar devices, etc.)
Assist in coordination with contractors to obtain cost estimates and perform work.
Perform preventative maintenance, repair, and installation in connection with the Community Center (e.g. parking lot, landscape beds, turf area)
Perform snow removal of walkways around the Community Center and the parking lot
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of proper safety precautions when using cleaning agents, lifting heavy objects, and performing maintenance duties in hazardous settings; Electrical, painting, carpentry, masonry, HVAC, and plumbing building standards; Hand, power, and specialty tools, including their uses, repair, maintenance, and safety;
Skilled in general custodial practices; Handling multiple projects with interruptions;
Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as floor scrubs, vacuums, and carpet shampooers; Perform manual labor, including: working on ladders, lifts, rooftops, and in cold, hot, or dusty conditions; Use common hand, power, and specialty tools as well as miscellaneous office equipment; Receive, understand, and follow directions as given; Work with minimal supervision; Read and interpret documents, such as: safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hands to handle or feel, climb or balance, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to cleaning agents, risk of electrical shock, hazards associated with HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Equipment work. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, to high, precarious places, and to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate or moderate loud noise.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must be 18 years of age or older
High School Diploma or GED, and
4 years of experience in construction, inspection compliance testing, survey, or similar experience related to the above duties
Valid Driver’s License
Registered Storm Water Inspector (RSI) preferred, or must obtain within 12 months of hire
